The BC Sheriff’s Office sent a marine deputy, a patrol officer, and search and rescue personnel to the scene. About a quarter of a mile north of the park’s main boat ramp was where the camp was set up. When they got there, they did a boat search of the area near the coast.
The hillside surrounding the camp was searched in a grid pattern by ground troops. The area was steep and covered with bushes, and it had a number of shallow gorges. Campmates of Nguyen’s aided in the ground search.
Deputy Daisy and her handler began searching the surrounding area, including the nearby slope and the beach. Nguyen’s shoes, which had been reported as being near the campsite when he disappeared, were discovered a short distance inland.
The afternoon saw the deployment of a second boat and additional ground teams to aid in the search, including search and rescue air scent K9 Pepper and her handler, Ellen Bishop. The deputies asked those who were boating and camping nearby if they had seen Nguyen, but no one had.
