Actor Paul Reubens, best known for his role as children’s TV star Pee-wee Herman in the 1980s, passed away on Monday, his team announced, following a long battle with cancer. He was 70.
Who Was Paul Reubens? Paul Reubens was born in Peekskill, New York, but he spent the majority of his formative years in Sarasota. He always had a thing for comedy, and he thought that maybe growing up in Sarasota, the winter home of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum Circus, had something to do with it.

On Sunday night, Paul Reubens, the actor best remembered for playing Pee-wee Herman, passed away in private after a battle with cancer. He was 70.

I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.β
The Pee-wee Herman character had a bright red bowtie, a grey suit, and a flattop hairdo, and spoke his signature squeaky, high-pitched lines like “I know you are, but what am I?”
βLast night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,β wrote Reubensβ estate in the caption. βPaul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.β
