Oliver Taylor Hawkins was an American musician who was best known for being the drummer of the rock band Foo Fighters, with whom he recorded eight studio albums between 1999 and 2021. Before joining the group in 1997, he toured with Sass Jordan, Alanis Morissette, and Sylvia, a progressive experimental band.
Hawkins started his own band, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, in 2004. He played drums and sang in the band, which put out three studio records between 2006 and 2019. In 2020, he co-founded the supergroup NHC with Jane’s Addiction’s Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney, where he was also the main vocalist and drummer.
As a member of Foo Fighters, Hawkins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. The British drumming magazine Rhythm voted him “Best Rock Drummer” in 2005. On March 25, 2022, at the age of 50, he passed away in Bogotรก, Colombia.

The next day, Colombian authorities announced that an initial toxicology analysis of Hawkins’ urine tests revealed that he had ten substances in his system at the time of his death, including opioids, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and THC. The National Institute of Forensic Medicine of Colombia stated that it would “continue the medical studies to achieve total clarification of the events that led to Taylor Hawkins’ death” and that the attorney general’s office would investigate his cause of death in a “timely” manner.
According to the Colombian magazine Semana, Hawkins perished of an overdose of heroin, antidepressants, and benzodiazepines, resulting in a sudden cardiac arrest. According to the publication, forensic medical specialists were shocked by how enlarged the musician’s heart had become.
