Oregon Schools Increase Security Measures in Wake of Sh00ting

Following the tragic shooting on July 22 at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital, also in Portland, Oregon, Legacy Health, based in Portland, is stepping up security at its hospitals. PoniaX Kane Calles, 33, was shot by police for allegedly shooting Bobby Smallwood, 44, a hospital security guard, who later passed away after being taken to another institution.

A second hospital employee was hurt on July 21, received treatment at Good Samaritan, and was then allowed to return home. Mr. Calles was discovered by police in a car in Gresham, Oregon. According to authorities, Mr. Calles died as a result of an officer-involved shooting. No policemen were hurt.

The president and CEO of Legacy Health, Kathryn Correia, announced the installation of metal detectors with bag searches at each hospital in the system in a message published online on July 29.

Legacy Health to Implement New Security Measures

In her letter, Ms. Correia stated that “all patients and visitors will enter our hospitals through controlled access points with metal detection and bag search.” “On July 31, metal detectors will be deployed in a few hospitals. Metal detectors will soon be seen in other hospitals.”

She added that Legacy Health will also put bullet-proof glass at interior entrances, emergency rooms, and hospital main doors. Tasers will be available to security personnel who have successfully completed training and certification.

Additionally, “we have begun to develop a second phase of actions, and that work will continue over the next several months,” wrote Ms. Correia. “This includes assessing the safety needs at our medical office buildings and our community-based clinics and reviewing locations that may need additional safety measures, including badge access controls, panic alarms and security cameras.”
