Man Detained for Intentionally Driving at a Police Officer in Downtown Portland

On Saturday night (1 July) in northwest Portland, police reported that a man had attempted to strike a Portland Police Bureau officer with a vehicle. PPB reported that shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday, an officer in a police vehicle observed a black 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix driving directly toward him.

The suspect avoided a collision by slamming on his brakes at the last possible moment. The driver turned around and attempted to collide with the officer’s car once more. According to the police, the officer attempted to gain distance and called for support.

The suspect continued his pursuit of the officer while his tires skidded. According to PPB, he had erratic starts, pauses, and turns. The officer was unable to halt the suspect, so other officers pursued him.
