On Monday (3 July), one of the two suspects in a shooting that injured two Clackamas County deputies late last month was arraigned on attempted murder charges.

The second suspect, 46-year-old Joseph Ray Shaffer, was charged with theft in the first degree and burglary in the second degree. His bail amount was set at $40,000.

According to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, the two injured deputies have been released from the hospital and are recuperating from their wounds. Deputy Dan Blair and Deputy Jeremy McKenna were identified.

Do you know that an individual attempted to hit a Portland Police Bureau officer with a vehicle on Saturday night (1 July) in northwest Portland? Saturday at approximately 6:00 p.m., an officer in a police vehicle reportedly observed a black 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix driving directly toward him:

As deputies responded to a burglary at 7 a.m. near Southeast Johnson Creek Boulevard and Southeast Bell Avenue, a gunshot occurred, according to officials. Upon arrival, deputies discovered two men at the crime site; however, when they attempted to detain them for questioning, one of the suspects allegedly drew a gun and opened fire.

The news was also reported on social media by other news outlets –

According to officials, one deputy was wounded in the arm and another in the abdomen. Sheriff Angela Brandenburg stated that at least one deputy fired back, but none of the suspects were hit.

Dr. Davis Zonies, an associate chief medical officer and trauma surgeon at OHSU said –

“The injury, though it did fracture his pelvis, was just millimeters away from his internal organs, which would have led to a very [different] path, requiring emergency surgery and potentially a different outcome.”

According to authorities, this was the fourth time this year that suspects fired upon CCSO deputies. The grand jury will consider the case the following week.

CCSO said in a press release –

“The district attorney’s office remains committed to holding violent offenders accountable including those who attack law enforcement. We recognize the sacrifices law enforcement officers make each and every day in Clackamas County and across the State of Oregon. We are dedicated to doing everything in our power as an agency to keep law enforcement safe as we work together for a safer Clackamas County.”
