Portland Ranked 25 on the List of Large Cities With the Highest Middle Class Ceilings

The percentage of Americans who are middle class has decreased from 61% in 1971 to 50% in 2021, according to the Pew Research Center. That’s why recent research calculated the median household income in five of America’s most populous metropolises, including Portland, to determine what it takes to be classified as middle class there.

Data for the study came from the Council for Community and Economic Research’s Cost of Living Index, the Pew Research Center, and Zillow, among others. The research was done by the financial technology firm SmartAsset.

Portland, Oregon, is in the top 25 of the 100 metro areas regarding annual income sufficient for inclusion in the middle class.

As a whole, the analysis reveals that the West Coast is home to several of the best places when it comes to middle-income thresholds. The top city on the list was Fremont, California, where an annual income of $311,936 places one squarely in the middle class. San Jose, Arlington, and finally, San Francisco, California, came after Fremont.

At number five on SmartAsset’s list, Seattle is one of the top five tech hubs where it is most difficult to enter the middle classβ€”middle-class wages in the city average between $74,223 and $221,562. Spokane, Washington, the other Pacific Northwest city covered in the survey, ranked 66th. The lowest middle-class ceilings were in Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo, Cincinnati, and Newark, New Jersey.

Furthermore, the researchers analyzed the median household incomes of all fifty states. Oregon’s middle-class workers make between $47,947 and $143,124 annually. The middle class in Washington State makes between $56,445 and $168,494 a year.
