When the COVID-19 pandemic hit at the beginning of 2020, everything that could be done from a distance was, including fitness classes, happy hours, doctor’s visits, and, most importantly, the workday.
But a lot of people stayed in person. This was partly because of the task or job. In October 2020, the Pew Research Center surveyed that 71% of people who could work from home did work from home. Still, workers with lower incomes were less likely to do so, no matter what they did for a living.
Geography also played a role. An OECD study found that jobs that could be done from anywhere were more likely to be in cities, but many rural areas tried to attract people who could now work from anywhere.
Even though offices were open again for in-person work, the shift to working from home didn’t end ultimately: In 2022, 59% of the people who answered another Pew Research Center survey still worked from home.
ClickUp used data from the American Community Survey by the Census Bureau in 2021 to rank the counties in Oregon where most people work from home at least some of the time.
In March 2020, many people chose to work from home for different reasons than in 2023. In the same 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center, people said that working from home made it easier to balance work and personal life and meet deadlines. In 2020, fewer people who worked from home were worried about being exposed to COVID-19.

Also, a 2022 survey by McKinsey & Company found that 87% of professionals who could work from home did so. People even said that a flexible schedule was the third best reason to look for a new job.
This study used the number of workers in a county to break ties. Estimates from the American Community Survey for a single year were only available for 11 of the 36 counties in the state. However, they were used instead of five-year estimates because work-from-home trends have changed so much in the past few years.
