Following Davis and his mother’s acquisition of the Oakland Raiders, Mark assumed the role of managing general partner. As the Raiders’ operating head, he is in charge of managing the team’s daily activities. Mark represents the team at owners’ meetings as well.
The Oakland Coliseum’s lease was about to expire, and because of the venue’s age, Davis began looking for a place to build the Raiders a new stadium.
In February 2015, he announced that the team would be working with the San Diego Chargers and their owner, Dean Spanos, to pursue a combined stadium in Carson, California, a town in Los Angeles County, even though his initial plan was to keep the team in Oakland.
Stan Kroenke, the owner of the Los Angeles Rams, put in a competing bid and eventually won. Afterwards, Davis and Sheldon Adelsonβthe founder, chairman, and CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corporationβexamined a stadium project in Las Vegas.
However, Davis moved forward with the project without Adelson’s assistance after the funding became available. In March 2017, the NFL approved the Raiders’ transfer to Las Vegas. Following Mark’s January 2021 purchase of the Las Vegas Aces WNBA team from MGM Resorts International, the NBA and WNBA approved the deal the following month.
That is, until Davis acquired ownership of the team, those who held season tickets. Becky Hammon became the highest-paid coach in the league when he named her the head coach of the Aces in May 2021.
