Many readers consider “Pet Sematary” to be the scariest novel Stephen King has written. The fact that King was so repulsed by the story’s vileness that he allegedly hid it away and didn’t want to publish it became part of the book’s promotional material.
Hollywood did eventually call after King’s terrifying story was published. The original film version of “Pet Sematary” was released in 1989, and a sequel came out in 1992. Then in 2019, we got yet another adaptation that diverged significantly from the original. The 2019 picture received mixed reviews, but being a huge “Pet Sematary” fan, I really enjoyed it.
There will be a prequel to the 2019 picture, “Pet Sematary,” titled “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.” The protagonist, Jud Crandal, is a youthful version of the nosy neighbor character played by John Lithgow in the upcoming film. There is a brand new trailer for “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” that we’ve dug up for you to watch down below.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines to Premiere on Paramount+
Bloodlines, a prequel to 2019’s Pet Sematary, will provide further context for the cemetery and Jud Crandall’s origins. His early encounters with the cemetery’s ghosts were addressed briefly in King’s novel but were never fully developed on screen until Bloodlines.
Fred Gwynne starred in the 1989 film adaptation of Pet Sematary and the sequel, Pet Sematary Two, was released in 1992, but it is often forgotten because it does not include Jud.
Rotten Tomatoes gives the 2019 Pet Sematary film a score of 56%, while moviegoers give it a score of 33%. The film’s commercial success, however, as measured by its $100 million worldwide gross, was sufficient to warrant a sequel, albeit one released only via streaming services.
The 2019 adaptation was criticized for being a rote retread of the original material, but the next prequel has the potential to rectify this by delving more into Jud’s mysterious past. When Pet Sematary: Bloodlines premieres on Paramount+ on October 6, we’ll finally find out.
