Congratulations, Home of Keri Russell: The Diplomat has been picked up for a second season on Netflix. We aren’t exactly shocked by this development. In The Diplomat, Keri Russell plays Kate Wyler, a woman who is appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom during a time of global conflict. In addition to the stresses of her work and the impending world war, her marriage to Hal (Rufus Sewell), a previous political star, is deteriorating.
The first season exploded after only eight episodes, and now both Russell’s personal and professional lives are in limbo.

Given that the show was watched for over 57.48 million hours in its first weekend, making it the most popular English-language series on Netflix in the United States and among the top 10 in 86 other countries, this comes as no surprise.
“Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat’s gripping and propulsive drama, and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler,” said Jinny Howe, Netflix’s vice president of drama series.
“After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what the amazing visionary team of Debora Cahn, Janice Williams, and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2.”

With Netflix’s track record of canceling shows, viewers had to wait a long time for that announcement despite the show’s potential.
Cahn told Elle that she normally seeks for projects that can continue for numerous seasons, which is indicative of her signing an overall agreement with the streaming giant.
“I have been fortunate in my life to work on a lot of long-running series, so I think that’s how I think,” she said. “I look for stories that can go on for a long time because, for me, the excitement of being able to go in really deep with characters you already know and you have a relationship with is fantastic.”
The second season should have been worked out by now. Even if that’s the case, the current climate in Hollywood makes it unlikely that the film will be released on streaming services anytime soon. Of course, we’re talking about the ongoing strikes by actors and writers.
Since the strike began in May, it’s highly improbable that Cahn and colleagues have put pen to paper to produce the second season screenplay.
The strike shows no signs of ending anytime soon, and there have been no rumors of a solution being reached, suggesting that this impasse could last until the end of the year.
Therefore, the best-case scenario for The Diplomat’s fans is the fall of 2024, with the latter being considerably more plausible.
Who Survived the Second Explosion in The Diplomat?
The season one finale of The Diplomat, episode eight, left viewers hanging. Herein are spoilers for Season 1.
Russell’s character, Kate, spends the whole first season trying to find allies and learn the truth about who blew up a British aircraft carrier off the coast of Iran. In the climactic minutes of the season finale, it is revealed that British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) was the mastermind behind the attack.
Trowbridge also authorized a second strike, which is revealed mere minutes before the season finale. Fans are left wondering if Hal (Sewell), Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), Ronnie (Jess Chanliau), and Merritt Grove (MP) survived the dramatic conclusion.
What transpired after the second explosion, who died, and how Kate’s professional and personal life would be affected by these disclosures will likely be explored in Season 2 of The Diplomat.
U.K. Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (played by David Gyasi) told Tudum that he is looking forward to more development of his connection with Kate in Season 2. I’m really curious to see where that connection goes, Gyasi remarked. One character says about the other, “They’re so opposite to each other, and yet when you scratch the surface, [you see] what drives them, [and] probably more connected to one another than a lot of other characters.”
