Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: What to Expect?

Contents

With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, where do I even begin? It looks very similar to its predecessor at first glance, and unless you put the two side by side, you wouldn’t know the difference.

In some ways, this is a good thing, as the Z Fold from last year remains the greatest big-screen foldable currently available. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 has stiffer competition this year, so any negative perceptions about the phone’s age could be disastrous for Samsung.

My research has led me to the conclusion that the Z Fold 5 is not only a great phone, but the closest thing we have to a mainstream, large foldable smartphone that most people will use constantly. What does this mean for you, the prospective customer? You’re faced with a difficult choice, but I’ll do what I can to ease the burden.

Our verdict on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

After a week with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 in the United Kingdom, Andy Boxall wrote this review on August 7, 2023. After further use and testing, it will be modified in the next weeks and months.

On August 13, we revised the review to reflect the fact that you can buy a Galaxy Z Fold 5 right now.

In addition to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Watch 6, and Galaxy Tab S9 series, Samsung also introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 5 during their second 2023 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. As of August 11th, it was being shipped to customers.

Priced at a minimum of $1,799.99 (or Β£1,749 or AU$2,599), it’s clear that this is a high-end smartphone. That’s for a configuration with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage space.

The base model costs $1,919.99 / Β£1,849 / AU$2,799, the 512GB model costs $2,159.99 / Β£2,049 / AU$3,149, and the 1TB model costs $2,159.99 / Β£2,049 / AU$3,149. All models include the same amount of RAM.

When compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which starts at $1,799 / Β£1,649 / AU$2,499, the Z Fold 5’s prices are higher throughout the board except in the United States, where the base model remains unchanged in price.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: What to Expect?

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 features an improved chipset in the form of a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. This is the same chipset found in the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, and it’s somewhat faster than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 used in most Android phones.

However, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 featured in the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is only a half generation behind.

Even so, it’s the best Samsung could do with the resources at hand, so the Z Fold 5 should be as powerful as any other top smartphone.

In addition to the chipset, you can choose up to 1TB of storage and 12GB of RAM, all of which are unchanged from last year.

Android 13.1 powers the phone, with Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 serving as a skin on top. The device also has dual speakers, a fingerprint scanner on the side, and 5G connectivity. The Samsung S Pen stylus can be used with the phone, however, it is available separately.

Four years of Android version upgrades and five years of security patches are promised for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. Even though it’s not as good as Apple’s phone support, it’s better than what most other Android makers can offer.
