Wider concerns about institutional racism and restrictions on the authority of principals and the superintendent are being raised as a result of the Portland school board’s unwillingness to approve the dismissal of a popular Black teacher who was suspected of lying to his principal.

The instructor who claimed to be absent due to illness while, in reality, he was working elsewhere for pay during school hours, was threatened with dismissal by Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero. The board voted 4-3 to stop this.
