Authorities say gunfire broke out early Sunday morning during a Juneteenth party in Illinois. One person was killed, and at least 22 others were hurt.
Around 12:30 a.m., a big group of young people had gathered for a party in a parking lot near Route 83, a major state highway, in Willowbrook, a suburb about 20 miles west of Chicago. Around that time, police walking around the area were called away to check out another report of a fight nearby. In a news release, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office said they returned to the meeting after hearing gunshots.

The sheriff said multiple rounds were fired into the crowd by an unknown number of suspects with various guns. Witnesses told CBS Chicago earlier on Sunday that they heard between 20 and 30 gunshots at the event, attended by more than 200 teens and young adults. Witnesses and police said the Juneteenth party was calm until the shooting started. Another witness said that they heard a lot of gunshots.

The sheriff’s office said that in addition to the people who were shot, several others were hurt as they tried to escape the killing scene. Different hospitals in the area are treating the people who were injured. When the sheriff sent out the news, no one knew how they were doing.
Authorities haven’t found a suspect or a possible reason for the shooting or said anything about the people who were hurt in the attack. The sheriff’s office is looking into what happened. Detectives are talking to victims and witnesses and looking at the area’s camera footage and cell phone records. The office said the area and shops near the shooting will be closed until further notice.
