Authorities say an inmate at the Multnomah County Detention Center in downtown Portland chewed off part of a jailer’s finger and injured two other deputies on Thursday(18 May 2023), prompting a lengthy lockdown of the facility.
Deputy John Plock, the sheriff’s office’s spokesman, said that a corrections officer sustained a “significant wound” to the tip of his finger around 9:45 a.m. when he and two other deputies tried to remove a man from a housing unit out of fear that he may hurt himself.

Plock stated that all three deputies were taken to the hospital for treatment of their various wounds. Plock said that the convict, whose identity he did not immediately reveal, was also sent to the hospital for treatment.
Plock claims that the normal time for inmates to be released from their cells was extended to 3:30 p.m.
As John Plock previously stated,
“Lockdowns are actually common at MCDC and are usually short; 10-15 minutes,”. “Lockdowns for extended periods of time, like yesterday, are not common but do happen.”

Plock claimed that other deputies were needed to help the injured police and the detainee get out of the jail, which was a substantial drain on personnel. The limited guards available had to take care of the basics, like taking inmates to court (three blocks away) and processing their release.
