Jack Swamba was a 19-year-old Michigan State University student and a U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadet who died in a tragic motorcycle accident on October 11, 2023.

He was a vibrant, self-confident and driven soul who had a passion for his Catholic faith, sports, military and life. He is survived by his parents, brother, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends who loved him dearly. This article is a tribute to his life and legacy.

Who Was Jack Swamba?

Jack was born on April 25, 2004, in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Livonia. He attended Detroit Catholic Central High School, where he excelled in sports and academics. He was a star football running back and an assistant captain on the hockey team that won the state championship in 2021-2022.Β He also enjoyed computer gaming, attending concerts, working out, war history and his 2005 Ford Mustang GT.

Jack was a leader on and off the field. He was known for his charisma, courage and competitiveness. He inspired his teammates with his work ethic, dedication and enthusiasm. He also had a great sense of humour and a warm personality that made him popular among his peers.

Jack had a tremendous passion and respect for the military since he was a child. He followed the family legacies of attending Michigan State University and joining the U.S.Β Army. He received a Michigan State University (MSU) U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship as a result of family traditions at MSU and in the military.

In the ROTC program, Jack excelled as a student, role model and leader.Β He earned the elite privilege of Pathfinder, Expert Marksmanship and more. He had a dream of becoming a U.S. Army officer and serving his country with honour and pride.

How Did Jack Die?

On October 11, 2023, Jack was riding his motorcycle near East Lansing when he was struck by a turning vehicle. He died at the scene from his injuries. His death shocked and saddened his family, friends, schoolmates and community.

Jack’s funeral was held on October 21, 2023, at St. Edith Catholic Church in Livonia. Hundreds of people attended to pay their respects and celebrate his life. His family received an American flag from the U.S. Army as a symbol of his service and sacrifice.
