Actor, writer, and SAG president Ed Asner lived in the United States.
The 91-year-old actor earned seven Primetime Emmys, more than any other male performer in the show’s history. Five of those wins were for his portrayal of Lou Grant.
The spinoff series starring him as Lou Grant ran from 1977 to 1982 and was titled after him.
El Dorado, Elf, Working Class, The Glades, and Briarpatch all featured Asner in leading roles.
Ed Asner Cause of Death
Ed Asner, the Emmy-winning actor best known for his roles as Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and Carl Fredericksen in “Up,” died on August 29, 2022, at the age of 91. His family confirmed the news in a statement.
“We are sorry to say that our beloved patriarch passed away this morning peacefully,” the statement read. “He was a legend in his own right, but to us he was simply Dad.”
Asner’s cause of death was natural causes. He had been in declining health in recent years.
Ed Asner: A Voice for Social Justice
Ed Asner was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1929. He began his acting career in the early 1950s, appearing in a variety of television shows and movies. He gained widespread recognition for his role as Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” which ran from 1970 to 1977. Asner won five Emmy Awards for his performance on the show, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series four times.
After “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” ended, Asner continued to work steadily in television and film. He had recurring roles on shows like “Cheers,” “The Practice,” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” He also starred in the films “Up,” “Elf,” and “The Iron Giant.”
Asner was also a vocal political activist. He was a longtime supporter of Democratic causes and was a vocal critic of the Vietnam War. He was also a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild.

Ed Asner’s Legacy
