As the Lookout fire spreads in Oregon’s central Cascade Mountains, several well-liked natural features along the McKenzie River Trail are off-limits to the general public.
The Willamette National Forest notified on Friday that Blue Pool, Sahalie Falls, Koosah Falls, and the McKenzie River Trail are blocked until further notice. The formal fire closure is in place until September 18, but depending on how the fire is doing, it can be lifted sooner or kept in place longer.
According to officials, the Lookout fire raged over Lookout Mountain above the McKenzie River between Eugene and Bend as of Monday morning, consuming 11,174 acres. Although Lookout Mountain appears to have some older stands of trees, the region has been intensively logged, like other woods in Oregon.

Several other trailheads, campgrounds, boat launches, and day-use areas, including the Ollalie region and Carpenter Mountain overlook, are also completely closed. The higher terminus of the McKenzie River Trail, Clear Lake, is still accessible, but all trailheads are closed.
