At roughly 11:45 a.m., the MTPD and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) were called to the scene of a shooting at the Navy Yard Station, according to the responding officers. When police arrived, they discovered the wounded man. That’s where he ultimately passed away.

An early investigation by MPD reveals that the suspect and the victim argued on the Green Line Metro after the suspect boarded the train at the L’Enfant Plaza stop. After an altercation on the train intensified, the suspect opened fire, killing the victim many times.

“Try to be extra cautious and vigilant. I think I feel most safe,” said Ivan Panado. Others, such as the leader of the D.C. Guardian Angels, have voiced a desire for more security measures, such as installing metal detectors at train station entrances.

“It’s touchless, so you don’t even know it’s there,” said John Ayala. “You just walk through, and it will pick up on you, scan you quickly, and see if you have any weapons.” According to MPD, they have identified a suspect.
