The game of golf is said to have started in Scotland in the 15th century. The first genuine 18-hole round was played in St. Andrews, Scotland, on what is now called “the old course.”
Golf is spread worldwide, which is excellent for people who like to play it. It is thought that there are between 15,000 and 16,000 courses in the United States. I live on the west coast, so I wanted to know which methods are the most exclusive.
I asked some of my golfing friends who have traveled a lot for their thoughts, and it didn’t surprise me that they all agreed on a short list of places at or near the top. Here are three of them, one from each of Washington’s states: Oregon, California, and both.
Seattle Golf Club in Washington State
The Seattle Golf Club is a private golf club in Shoreline, Washington, open only to its members. It has a long history of hosting important golf tournaments, such as the 1952 U.S. Amateur Championship.
It was founded in 1900. The course was designed by golf course architect H. Chandler Egan and redesigned by “The King” Arnold Palmer in 1996. It has tree-lined fairways, well-kept greens, and beautiful Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains views.
I haven’t played this course, but I did take a tour of it when I lived in Seattle a few years ago. It’s beautiful, looks complex, and has been well cared for.

Pronghorn Golf Resort in Oregon
Bend, Oregon’s Pronghorn Resort is a high-end golf resort. The Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus, made the 18-hole golf course at the resort. The system is known for being difficult and having beautiful views of the Cascade Mountains.
The course’s fairways, greens, bunkers, and water hazards are all well taken care of. This one is on my list of courses I must play this year.
Cyprus Point Golf Course in California
The Cyprus Point Golf Course is famous. It is in California on the Monterey Peninsula. The architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. made the course, which opened in 1986.
As you can see in the video below, it is known for its beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and the rocky coast and its challenging layout with narrow fairways and well-protected greens.
The course has been used for several well-known golf tournaments and is thought to be one of the best in the world. This one is on my list of golf courses I want to play.
