Steven Crump, a well-known WBTV reporter, passed away at the age of 65 after a five-year fight with cancer. Crump died last Thursday. In July 2018, he was diagnosed with colon cancer.
Crumpβs death was revealed by the station On Thursday, 31, August, 2023 with the station describing him as the conscience of the WBTV newsroom. He died of colon cancer following a five-year fight.
Steve was a dedicated newsman who spent decades telling the stories of the greater Charlotte community with passion. He was also a beloved colleague, friend, and mentor to many, both in the WBTV newsroom.
He was determined to spread the truth, and broadcasting became the vehicle of choice. His genuine calling was to be a part of the lives of those in his community and to share their truths. We shall stand firm and never forget his passion.
Steve Crump Career
WBTV stated Crump was born in the city of Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1980 and started working for WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky.
Prior to moving to Charlotte in April 1984, he worked at several other news stations across the country. He was honored by WBTV for his coverage of many significant events, including the trials of former Carolina Panther Rae Carruth and Jim Bakker.
Crump has garnered numerous awards and distinctions throughout his career, including the first-ever Journalist of the Year Award from the National Association of Black Journalists in 2017.
Crump announced his cancer battle less than a month ago. Crump reported that within 12 hours after his initial diagnosis, one doctor advised hospice care for him.
His experience motivated him to raise awareness about possibly life-saving colon cancer screenings. He also attributed his survival to his strong Christian faith, his wife’s continual care, and his medical personnel.
