Adam Johnson, a hockey player from Minnesota who briefly played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, passed away over the weekend in the United Kingdom following a “freak accident” during a match, according to his team. Johnson was 29.
Johnson sustained a cut to his neck with a skate blade while competing for the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League on Saturday night at Utilita Arena Sheffield versus the Sheffield Steelers, according to the Associated Press.
The players returned to the locker rooms after the Panthers announced on Saturday that the Challenge Cup match had “stopped” due to a “bad injury.” Following that, fans were told to evacuate the venue “due to a major medical emergency.”
“Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night,” the Panthers announced in a statement:
βAdam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him. The Club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him,β the club wrote.
The statement went on, “The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adamβs family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.” “Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adamβs passing.”

Regarding Johnson’s fate, the team remained silent. In the most trying of circumstances, it read, “The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night.” From 2018 to 2020, Johnson was a forward with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League.
“The Pittsburgh Penguins join the entire hockey world in mourning the loss of Adam Johnson, whose life tragically ended far too soon,” The Penguins said in a statement:

At the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he played collegiate hockey, Johnson was well-liked by his teammates, according to his coach Scott Sandelin.
βThe guys loved him. They respected him,β the coach said to reporters on Monday. “He was fun to be around, sometimes the life of the party.” The Elite Ice Hockey League announced that all of Sunday’s games will be rescheduled.
