Brendan Malone’s Basketball Legacy: From Iona College to the NBA
Brendan Malone was a great basketball player. After graduating from Iona College, he began teaching CYO basketball in Queens. In 1967, he was hired by Power Memorial Academy to coach the junior varsity basketball team.
Brendan got his master’s degree in physical education from New York University in 1968 because he was very interested in education. He was the coach of Power Memorial’s senior basketball team from 1970 to 1976, and they won two city titles during that time. He was named “Coach of the Year” three times too.
After that, he became a college basketball coach at Fordham, Yale, and Syracuse, where he worked with Coach Jim Boeheim. From 1984 to 1986, Brendan was the head coach at the University of Rhode Island.
In the NBA, he started out as an assistant coach for the New York Knicks in 1986. He then moved on to coach the Detroit Pistons, where he helped them win two NBA titles in 1989 and 1990.
