Although Brooke Shields has been a national name for the better part of her life, the new Hulu documentary Pretty Baby reveals that she did not have an easy time as a child.
The two-part documentary, directed by Miss Americana’s Lana Wilson, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and “critiques a toxic culture and power structure that perpetuates misogyny and is complicit in the sexualization and objectification of young girls,” according to the festival’s summary. “But most importantly, it’s the inspiring tale of Brooke Shields coming into her own and claiming her independence,” says the reviewer.
The controversial 1978 film about a child raised in a New Orleans brothel inspired Shields’ breakthrough documentary. Shields told Vanity Fair in 2018 that “it was the best creative project I’ve ever been associated with, the best group of people I’ve ever been blessed to work with.”

The amount of money Brooke Shields made for her controversial Calvin Klein ad has been the subject of different accounts. It has been stated that she was paid $500,000 for the iconic commercial alone, however, other sources indicate the figure was closer to $800,000.
