Does this mean that Bruce Lee, the martial arts legend famous for saying “Be water, my friend,” met his untimely demise due to an overabundance of this “friend”? That’s the theory advanced by a team of Spanish renal experts in a recent study.

As in, “Who shot Bruce Lee?” In the edition of Clinical Kidney Journal dated December 2022, the authors discuss “the hyponatremia theory.

“Lee died at the age of 32 in Hong Kong on 20 July 1973, under mysterious circumstances,” the publication reads, playing into the legend surrounding the actor’s death. Although many theories have been proposed, including assassination by triad criminals and, more recently in 2018, heatstroke, the actual reason for Bruce Lee’s death remains a mystery.

The studies conducted by the kidney experts are based on published literature and scientific studies already available to the public.

According to the 2018 biography Bruce Lee: A Life by Matthew A. Polly, Lee took the painkiller Equagesic and went to take a nap on July 20, 1973, after complaining of a headache. He was discovered unresponsive and taken to the hospital, where he was subsequently declared dead upon arrival.

Dr. Peter Wu, a neurosurgeon, speculated that cerebral edema, or swelling of the brain, was the cause of Lee’s death. Over the years, however, several hypotheses have been proposed as to what triggered Lee’s cerebral edema. Even though Lee had apparently taken the painkiller Equagesic before, a coroner determined that a reaction to the drug caused the cerebral edema that ultimately led to his death.

Others had speculated that the cannabis in Lee’s system might have had a role in his death, but the forensic scientist assigned to the case, Donald Teare, said otherwise.

In his biography published in 2018, Polly speculated that overheating and exercise may have contributed to Lee’s cerebral edema; this was especially likely given that Lee had underarm sweat glands removed in 1972.

Researchers in the year 2022 concluded that Lee’s death was the result of consuming too much water. Researchers in Spain looked into his kidneys and published their findings in the Clinical Kidney Journal, speculating that his brain swelling was due to an “inability to excrete excess water.”

Lee, who had been suffering from migraines and seizures, passed away two months after collapsing on the set of Enter the Dragon, which he was working on at the time of his death in 1973. He was taken to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with cerebral edema and released a few days later.
