‘Frontrunner’ Chuck Martin of Oregon Will Join the Staff of Kentucky

In May, Kentucky head coach John Calipari added veteran assistant coach John Welch, leaving just one opening on the Wildcats’ coaching staff. With the GLOBL JAM tournament less than three weeks away, the final member of Calipari’s 2023-24 roster has emerged.

On Saturday afternoon, Stadium’s Jeff Goodman claimed that Oregon assistant Chuck Martin, who has past experience under Calipari, is the “frontrunner” for the final seat on the staff.

From 2006 to 2008, Martin served as an assistant at Memphis while Calipari was the Tigers’ head coach. The native of San Juan, Puerto Rico has served as a coach at a total of eight different locations.

Chuck Martin Will Join Kentucky's Staff

Did you know that on Sunday (June 25), more than 120 Special Olympics golfers participated at the Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City? In distinct divisions, the golfers competed against opponents who possessed abilities roughly comparable to their own:

Martin, a graduate of Monmouth, made his first visit in Manhattan between 1999 and 2000. Then he spent a short time at UMass until 2001, followed by a few years at Drexel from 2001 to 2004. From 2004 through 2006, he made his final pit stop before Memphis at St. John’s.

Martin departed Memphis for his only head coaching position at Marist in Dutchess County, New York. He was dismissed in 2013 after compiling a 41-118 record over five seasons. He then served as a recruiter for the Oklahoma City Thunder before returning to college coaching as an assistant under Tom Crean at Indiana from 2014 to 2017.

In 2017, he moved to the SEC and joined Frank Martin’s staff at South Carolina, where he served as an assistant coach until 2021 and as an assistant head coach for an additional season. Martin joined Dana Altman’s staff in Eugene last season, but he could be on the move again, possibly rejoining with Calipari.
