In January 2023, a 66-year-old man was arrested in the Nehalem area of the Oregon Coast for illegally shooting at a herd of elk, killing one and mortally wounding three others. The guy cited “elk fever” for his actions.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife didn’t name the man because an investigation is still ongoing, the agency said in a news release.
The man was charged with several crimes, such as hunting in a way that wasn’t allowed, shooting from the road, illegally taking or having antlerless elk, and illegally taking or having bull elk.
Troopers took the man’s.308 rifle and the elk he had tagged and butchered as proof.
The Oregon State Police said in a news release that State Police Fish and Wildlife troopers responded to a call to the Turn in Poachers tip line and found three hurt elk in a group of about 30. At that time, troops killed a cow elk that had been fatally hurt.

The hunter had already left with a cow elk because he had a late-season cow elk tag and permission from the landowner to hunt there.

Troopers checked on the herd again the next day, putting a badly hurt bull to sleep. Cow elk that was hurt ran into the Nehalem River and is thought to have died there.
The landowner told State Police that the hunter had stopped at the road and begun shooting. Later, the landowner called the man and told him that he should turn himself in for poaching. The man did come forward.
