Will Dark Winds Be Renewed for Season 3? Executive Producer Chris Eyre Is Optimistic

Season 2 of Dark Winds concludes on AMC this Sunday, and while the show’s future is uncertain at the moment, executive producer Chris Eyre is optimistic about the show’s chances of returning for a third season.

In an interview with TVLine, Eyre stated that the show has not yet reached its full potential and that there are many more stories to be told. So far, AMC has decided not to renew the show.

With this series, I don’t think we’ve got our stride yet,” Eyre said. There’s plenty of detective/Navajo police drama to go around with Tony Hillerman’s 18 [Leaphorn & Chee] books and Anne Hillerman’s 5.

“Somebody at my gym mentioned this to me, that ‘I just want to see what happens to these characters now,” Eyre continued. “It feels like we’ve gotten the show on its feet. And now that it’s on its feet I want to know what happens to the characters, too. I think that their evolution could be a long time coming β€” and a great journey.”

Is Season 3 of Dark Winds on the Cards?

As mentioned before, we don’t know if Dark Winds will be renewed at this time, but if Season 2’s cancellation is any indication, we might not have to wait too long. Just two weeks into its debut season, Dark Winds was renewed for a second.

Season 2 of Dark Winds has a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, the same as Season 1, despite the fact that it has been a bit longer since the show’s second season is coming to a close.

Dark Winds was developed by Graham Roland and is based on the novels by Tony Hillerman featuring Leaphorn and Chee. Both Listening Women and People of Darkness are adapted in Season 1.

Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) are Navajo police officers who investigate crimes on the reservation in the 1970s. Jessica Matten, Deanna Allison, Rainn Wilson, Elva Guerra, Jeremiah Bitsui, Eugene Brave Rock, Noah Emmerich, and Nicholas Logan join McClarnon and Gordon in the cast.

According to AMC’s synopsis for Season 2 of Dark Winds, “This season, Lt. Joe Leaphorn, reunites with Jim Chee, his former deputy turned private eye, when their separate cases bring them together in pursuit of the same suspect.”

They’re in the high desert of Navajo Country, on the trail of an assassin who’s set his sights on them to safeguard a secret that reopens old scars and tests Leaphorn’s professional and moral principles. Leaphorn and Chee, along with Sgt. Manuelito (Matten) and Valencia County Sheriff Gordo Sena (A Martinez, from Longmire), must stop their assassin and bring peace back to the tribe, which is dependent on them.

“People enjoy the show,” McClarnon said about the series previously. “I just want people to be entertained. It’s fantastic we are finally getting our own voice, Native peoples. I hope thatΒ Dark WindsΒ opens up that door a little bit more.”
