Kurt Busch Career
To fill the void left by the tragic death of Chris Trickle, the Star Nursery racing team began searching for a replacement. When he won the Nevada Dwarf Car Championship in 1995 and the Legend Cars Western States Championship two years later, Busch shot to fame.
Before competing in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series, a semi-professional NASCAR series, he joined the Star Nursery team.
In the Auto Zone Elite Division Southwest Series, he was named Rookie of the Year in 1998. In 1999, he and his Star Nursery teammates won the Southwest Tour Championship. That year, he signed a contract with Roush Racing, which allowed him to compete at a higher level.
In 2000, he competed in NASCAR’s Craftsman Truck Series, a series for drivers under the age of 35, which included him. In the series standings, his four victories placed him second.
He was the series’s youngest polesitter and race winner to date. Winning a qualifying race and moving up to a better starting position in the main event gives you the pole position. This success earned Roush a promotion to the Winston Cup Series, where he will replace Chad Little.
In seven Winston Cup races, Busch failed to win a single one. For the 2001 season, Roush Racing decided to make him a full-time Winston Cup Series driver, even though he had never won a race in his career.
More than $2 million in prize money was his reward for finishing in the top five in three of his races in that calendar year. Raced against Dale Earnhardt in the 2001 Daytona 500, Busch was given the middle finger while going 185mph.
