Many people were shocked and saddened by Ryan Keeler’s untimely death, and a police inquiry was launched to determine the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Now that the autopsy reports are in, the investigation can be officially completed. Here is what we learned about what killed Ryan Keeler.
UNLV Ryan Keeler Cause of Death
Former Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park football star Ryan Keeler, who died in February while attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, had heart disease, according to the results of an autopsy.
Keeler, a 20-year-old defensive lineman at UNLV, had recently finished his redshirt freshman year. He played in seven games for UNLV in 2022 after transferring from Rutgers University at the end of the 2021 season.
In February of this year, he was discovered lifeless in his Las Vegas studio unit. The Clark County Coroner’s office reported Tuesday that they had found natural causes to be the cause of Keeler’s death.
“Keeler died of cardiac dysrhythmia due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which is essentially fatal arrythmia due to thickening of the heart muscle,” according to coroner’s office spokesperson Stephanie Wheatley. “We join the community and members of UNLV Athletics in mourning the loss of this rising football star and send our condolences to Ryan’s family and friends.”
Keeler was recognized as Academic All-Mountain West for having a 3.80 GPA in pre-business. His classmates and teachers at Nazareth Academy and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas all took to social media to share the devastating news.
Who Was Ryan Keeler?
Ryan Keeler’s father gave him a football for his sixth birthday. When he first started playing football, he thought it was just a fun game. He had no idea that one day, he would be obsessed with being a famous football player. He announced on Facebook that he was enrolling in football drills at Next Level Athletics Quarterback Training.
In high school, he was a matched player who competed on the local circuit. After graduating high school, he started receiving scholarship offers from top schools including the University of Virginia and West Virginia.
On August 25, 2020, he committed to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. After that, he had overtures from the Cincinnati Bearcats, but he was already committed to Rutgers.
Then, on April 30, 2022, Ryan Keeler went via the transfer portal, and in February of the following year, he joined the UNLV Rebels. He had yet to compete in any high-profile games on the national or state levels. When he registered his name on the transfer website, he made the following statement:
Please accept my sincere appreciation to Coach Schiano and Rutgers University for their support throughout the previous academic year. I’ve given it some thought, and I’ve decided to put my name in for the transfer.
