There have been warnings about the area’s declining air quality due to a fire burning in a waste pile at a recycling facility close to the Port of Oakland.
On the border of Jack London Square, along Embarcadero West, a fire is raging at Schnitzer Steel.
According to the Oakland fire Department, the fire is confined, which means it won’t spread but will burn for a while.

Due to the smoke from the fire, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued an air quality advisory for some areas.
On Wednesday evening, the smoke is anticipated to affect Oakland, San Leandro, Fremont, and Alameda, with potential effects as far south as San Jose. The smoke is anticipated to be pushed south and east by winds. The Air District is keeping a careful eye on this situation.
Jack London Square, where the only persons present were those who had just gotten off the ship, was cleared of the thick smoke caused by the fire.
“Looks very scary. I hope they’re going to turn it out soon,” tourist Ljuba Keenan said.
For San Francisco Bay Ferry, Naarai Zaynah is employed. She said that many passengers on board were shocked as they neared the fire.
“We started passing out masks to try and help protect them as much as we could,” Zaynah said.

The major concern among those we spoke with was the potential effects on their health.
“I’m going to get out of here real soon because this isn’t healthy to be breathing in and if it wasn’t for the dog I wouldn’t be out in it,” Oakland resident Jason Bolden Anderson said.
While the smoke continues to affect the area, OFD’s hazardous material will monitor the air quality often and will collaborate with the county to update the locals.
The most recent fire at Schnitzer Steel occurred in June 2020; there have been more than a half-dozen others since 2010.
