A 9-year-old girl was tragically shot in front of her Chicago house by a neighbor, who is said to have fired the gun at her before her father went toward the shooter and knocked him to the ground.
The kid was shot and killed Saturday night as she rode her scooter to a local ice cream truck to purchase some ice cream. Michael Goodman, 43, is charged with first-degree murder in her death.
The shooting occurs as the US struggles with pervasive gun violence, which is the country’s biggest cause of mortality for children and teenagers.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Wonder database states that in 2021, firearms were responsible for about 19% of child deaths (ages 1–18). That year, incidents involving guns resulted in about 3,600 youngsters dying.
According to the document, known as a bond proffer, the girl’s father was speaking to friends in a car in front of his Portage Park apartment as his daughter, described as “V,” was riding her scooter before Saturday’s shooting.
After hearing a gunshot, the father advised his daughter to ride her scooter back to the apartment.
CNN confirms the news on its official Twitter account:
“As V approached the front door of her apartment building, D (shooter) emerged from his apartment building across the street holding a firearm,” the document states.
The affidavit claims that the father shouted at the neighbor, Michael Goodman, “what he was doing,” when he was seen by him and other witnesses approaching the youngster across the street.
“While V’s father ran to his daughter, he observed D raise the firearm, point it at the V, and shoot the V in the head. V’s father tackled D into the vestibule and as they both fell to the ground the gun discharged, striking D in the eye,” the document said.
The youngster was brought to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. After being detained, the suspect was brought to a hospital.
Father Witnesses Daughter’s Murder
The paper stated that when police swabbed the suspect’s hands while he was in the hospital, they found evidence of gunshot residue. The apartment’s exterior saw the recovery of a 9 mm Canik weapon.
Goodman is being detained without bail at the request of the authorities.
The document claims that the defendant “is responsible for the death of a person and that the defendant had a firearm and that he discharged that firearm and it directly caused the death of another person.”
The Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions published a paper this year stating that the gun violence epidemic in the US was deadlier than ever in 2021.
In 2021, the number of firearm-related homicides and suicides reached record highs, totaling approximately 49,000 deaths.
During the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of firearm-related deaths skyrocketed, and it did so again in the following year. The 8% increase was the biggest one-year increase in four decades, resulting in nearly 3,600 more fatalities in 2021 than in 2020.
“Our country is breaking records for all the wrong reasons – record gun sales combined with increasingly permissive gun laws are making gun violence a pervasive part of life in our country, leading to a sharp increase in gun deaths,” Ari Davis, policy adviser at the center and lead author of the report, said in a statement.
The survey indicated that suicides accounted for the majority of the year-over-year rise and more than half of all firearm deaths.
