Early on Saturday, a 12-year-old child was shot and killed in St. Paul’s North End; a 14-year-old man was detained and is facing manslaughter charges, according to police.

Police were summoned just before 5 a.m. to the 200 block of Stinson Street West in response to an allegation that a young guy had been shot. When they got there, they discovered a 12-year-old who appeared to have been shot.

The mother gave the boy’s name as Markee Jones, and he was taken to Regions Hospital, where he passed away.

In relation to Jones’ death, a 14-year-old was being detained at the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center, according to St. Paul police spokesperson Molly McMillen late Saturday afternoon.

We still don’t know what or how this happened, she added.

The gunshot, according to Jones’ relatives, was unintentional. Chyarm Hill, a niece of the boy’s mother Denisha Hill, stated, “It was an accident; we just don’t know how it happened.

According to Denisha Hill, her son, her son’s brother, and a cousin spent the night at her mother’s house. She continued, “My mom always has her grandkids over,” as family members gathered in the alleyway behind the house.

Hill, who resides in Inver Grove Heights, claimed that on Saturday her mother was away at a spiritual retreat in Rochester. She stated that there was an uncle staying there and that he was dozing off when the incident took place.
