After 12 horses and 24 dogs were discovered dead on her ranch on Friday, a 22-year-old Texas woman was detained on felony animal cruelty charges.
According to the Collin County website, Rachel Sword, 22, of Westminster, Texas, has been charged with cruelty to non-livestock animals, a third-degree felony, and cruelty to livestock animals/abuse, a state jail felony.
According to the arrest warrant document, Sword lives on the property owned by her grandparents, who told police they had difficulty caring for their animals as they age and thought Sword was doing it for them.
According to the affidavit, “investigators discovered several deceased horses on the property.” “The horses’ decay ranged from being completely skeletonized to being partially skeletonized with skin and fur, generally indicating the deaths were not recent.”
According to reports, some of the dogs were discovered dead within cages inside the RV Sword was residing in, while others were discovered in areas with no shade.
“Collin County is committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all animals throughout the county, and incidents such as this are taken very seriously,” the Collin County Sheriff’s Office is alleged to have stated in a release. There is no tolerance for abandoning or abusing animals at the Collin County Sheriff’s Office.

According to reports, Sword told detectives the animals belonged to her recently deceased spouse but she was too distraught to feed them.
According to FOX 4, authorities connected the home to 16 prior allegations of animal cruelty or neglect following her arrest.
Animal services are now caring for a number of additional creatures who were discovered to be alive on the property, including two horses, two dogs, a cow, a snake, two frogs, and a bearded dragon.
On a $85,000 bail, she is still being held, according to the Collin County website.
