On July 15, a 33-year-old Indonesian fitness influencer died after fracturing his neck while attempting to lift a 450-pound barbell.
Justyn Vicky, a popular Instagram user with over 30,000 followers, was killed while attempting to stretch his legs while holding a barbell over his shoulders. He had a spotter with him.
The workout had previously been described by the bodybuilder as “dangerous as hell” in a fitness video that was shared on his Instagram account on July 5.
“There are potential with the squat that is unmatched by any other exercise you can imagine. In the Instagram video, Vicky can be heard saying, “But it’s dangerous as hell.
Vicky can be seen attempting to raise the enormous barbell in a video that an Indonesian TV station was able to secure. He has his spotter with him, and they are both standing behind him.
Vicky is seen slipping back into a sitting position as he tries to retain the weight as the barbell hits the back of his neck. During the terrifying moment, his spotter also loses his equilibrium and can be seen tumbling backward.
Following the collision, Justyn was taken by emergency medical personnel to a nearby hospital with a broken neck and serious compression of important nerves leading to his heart and lungs.
He underwent urgent surgery but soon passed away.

In a touching Instagram post, The Paradise Bali, the club where he worked and the scene of the tragedy, referred to Vicky as “more than just a fitness expert.”
“He was a beacon of inspiration, motivation, and unwavering support.”
