A catastrophic rollover accident on July 15 claimed the life of a local young adult librarian, and the driver is now facing multiple charges. Jean Diaz, a young adult librarian at Belmont Library since 2015, was identified as the victim by Portland police. Diaz has two girls, aged 5 and 8, and a husband, Arturo, according to her GoFundMe page.
Arturo stated, “She touched innumerable lives and families with her entertaining story times and interesting community events. Jeanie was also a talented visual artist who created hundreds of vibrant, intricate, patterned pieces under the name Four Sided Friends and held numerous exhibitions throughout Portland.”
Kevin Michael Scott, 48, the driver of the vehicle, was taken into custody at the scene after police claimed he displayed signs of intoxication.

The Multnomah County Library expressed their sympathies to Diaz’s family and the significant part she played at various libraries throughout the area in a statement.
We are deeply saddened by the de@th of Jeanie Diaz on July 15. A Multnomah County Library employee since 2015. Jeanie was a popular youth librarian at Belmont Library and also worked at other branches in the past. Belmont Library is closed July 16 and 17 to allow Jeanie’s colleagues to process the tragic nature of her passing.
Jeanie radiated passion for her work with children and literacy. In her many years with the library, she touched the lives of innumerable young children and families across the county. The library extends its condolences to Jeanie’s family, loved ones, colleagues and to the families to whom she was so dedicated.
In addition to first-degree manslaughter, drunk driving, and reckless driving, Scott is accused of these offenses.
