A Multnomah County grand jury on Thursday indicted a 24-year-old Portland man on murder and bias-crime charges after he is alleged to have stabbed a man to death outside The High Dive bar in Southeast Portland earlier this month.
According to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, Rahnique Usef Jackson is charged with one case of second-degree murder, one count of illegal use of a weapon, and one count of a second-degree prejudice crime in connection with the passing of 32-year-old Colin Smith of Portland.
Smith’s ex-girlfriend Paulina Solis and court documents, Jackson allegedly stabbed Smith outside the bar on Southeast 12th Avenue at around 2:00 a.m. on July 2 after allegedly harassing an LGBTQ+ individual in Smith’s group of friends.
Smith, a server at the well-known Ox restaurant in Northeast Portland, and his companions were seated at the bar’s outdoor tables when Jackson approached them and harassed them.
Despite not being present at the establishment, Solis revealed to the Oregonian/OregonLive last week that Jackson had caused problems for Smith and his pals after touching one of them improperly and then turning his attention to one of Smith’s LGBTQ+ friends.

Bar Patron Arrested After Fight with Group of People
According to court documents, bar employees reportedly informed detectives that Jackson had been celebrating a birthday with some pals at the bar top before the confrontation.
According to court documents, staff members claimed Jackson appeared to be in a bad mood and departed the bar when one of the bartenders made a joke about his lack of tipping. The workers claimed that as he passed past Smith’s group outside, he started harassing them.
According to court filings, members of Jackson’s group told investigators they witnessed Jackson and another buddy yelling at a group of individuals who were seated outside, among them Smith. They described Jackson as “out of control and angry,” and they also saw Jackson and another friend fighting with the group.
Jackson’s group claimed to have seen Smith step back and fall to the ground shortly after the dispute descended into a melee at the junction of Southeast Madison Street and 12th Avenue. Jackson ran away while witnesses dialed 911.

The U.S. Marshals Service detained Jackson on Friday.
Smith, who was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, just relocated to Portland. According to Solis, he cherished hosting dinner parties for his pals and cooking. He had previously worked at Baby Doll Pizza and Ox for a combined total of over two years. According to Danielle Smith, his sister, he had aspirations of one day opening his own eatery.
