A Man Admits to Trying to Kill Two Portland Police Officers in 2022

Multnomah County DA Mike Schmidt said on June 06 that 37-year-old Matthew Leahey pled guilty to shooting at police officers during a traffic check in Northeast Portland last year.

On the night of May 6, 2022, at the intersection of Northeast 78th Avenue and Northeast Mason Street, two Portland officers from the Focused Intervention Team pulled Leahey over for moving violations.

The news was confirmed in a tweet, which you can view here:

After the police discovered that Leahey had provided them with false information and refused to show a driver’s license, one of the officers told him to put his hands on his head while sitting in the automobile.

Leahey ignored the police officer’s orders and shot at him, narrowly missing his head. As Leahey stepped out of the car with his weapon raised, aiming at a second cop, the officers fired fire.

Leahey admitted guilt on four counts as part of the settlement:

On June 8, before Judge Thomas Ryan, sentencing will take place.
