Lillis-Albina Park in North Portland will host a procession and multiple musical events in honor of Juneteenth.
PDX Jazz hosts this three-day festival from June 17–18. Cupid, BridgeCity Soul, Kirk Green, Greater Kind, Jason Neville, Funky Soul Band, BridgeCity Jazz, Tyrone Hendrix, Jubu Smith, Alonzo Chadwick, Arietta Ward, and Saeeda Wright are just a few of the groups who will be performing. There is a parade.

Then there is live music, art, food, educational booths, and a playground for the kids during the annual Juneteenth celebration in Oregon. All groups, including marching bands, teams, bikers, and pedestrians, are welcome to participate in the parade. Juneteenth Oregon accepts registrations online and over the phone (503) 267-4686.
On June 19, 1865, Union Gen. Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 to the people of Galveston, Texas, proclaiming the abolition of slavery: “The people of Texas are informed that by a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaved are free.” Juneteenth is also known as Independence Day or Freedom Day.

It wasn’t until 2021 that Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday. However, Oregonians had celebrated it since at least 1945 (when community organizer Clara Peoples introduced the practice to her coworkers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland).
