Just after 3 a.m., Portland Fire & Rescue announced on Twitter that a large pile of shredded tires near Peace Memorial Park had caught fire.

Authorities reported several empty grain silos adjacent to the pile, making getting water to the fire difficult due to the region’s lack of hydrants and trains.

Officials claim that personnel employed aerial master streams and a deck cannon to confine the blaze, but the flames still spread into an adjacent cargo container. Officials reported that all flames within the container were extinguished when a crew worked their way up the rubber slope.
