The suspect brandished a knife and threatened children outside the ice cream shop. A man was arrested after he threatened a group of children waiting outside an ice cream shop with a big hunting knife.
The Gresham Police Department responded to the address 19201 S.E. Stark St. at 4:44 p.m. on Thursday, May 18 after receiving reports of an armed mental health crisis. The suspect was yelling incoherently and, according to reports, claimed to be the Messiah.
Officers on patrol and those from the department’s Behavioral Health Unit worked together to apprehend the suspect.
Police gathered from their investigation that the suspect chased the kids as they tried to enter the store, threatening them with the knife the whole time. An employee who had gone to investigate claims that the suspect attacked them with a knife.
Workers barricaded themselves inside the company while being hounded by the suspect outside. An evaluation of the suspect’s mental health was conducted at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
Gresham Fire Department extinguishes blaze in apartment garage
On Friday afternoon, May 19, Gresham Fire extinguished a small fire in an apartment outbuilding, a one-story garage that had been utilized by a resident for storage.

The blaze was reported near 765 S.E. Mount Hood Highway at 2 in the afternoon. The fire was discovered by firefighters in the parking garage of the complex. The fire was extinguished in about 5 minutes, with minimal damage outside the garage.
The apartment siding was melted, but there were no casualties and no structural damage. Officials are trying to determine what led to the fire.
