Twenty-three Walmart stores throughout 12 states and the District of Columbia will close that year. The company closed its final two stores in Portland, Oregon, in March due to financial problems, and it closed four stores in the Chicago area last month.
In a statement, Walmart CEO Doug McMillion blamed record-breaking retail theft for the company’s poor financial results that year.
βTheft is an issue. Itβs higher than what it has historically been,β McMillon told CNBC. If authorities in Oregon don’t do something about widespread stealing, “prices will be higher, and stores will close,” McMillon warned.
