Officers Who Have Died on the Job Are Honored at a Ceremony

Oregon has honored the lives of 193 fallen police officers and their families. According to a press release, the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) is proud to host the annual Oregon Fallen Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial Ceremony in conjunction with the Oregon Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, Oregon Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S. ), the Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation, and the state’s various law enforcement associations.

Since the 1860s, 193 law enforcement personnel from Oregon have lost their lives while on the job, and this memorial is dedicated to them. Law enforcement personnel, prison officers, and parole and probation officers from local, county, state, tribal, and federal agencies are included.

This year’s event included the addition of the name of Sergeant Brian J. Gaunt of the Beaverton Police Department, End of Watch (EOW)10/24/21, to the state memorial for dead Oregon law enforcement officers.

In the line of duty, Gaunt contracted COVID-19 and tragically lost his life. Gaunt served for 21 years as a police officer, investigator, and canine handler with the Beaverton Police Department after retiring from the United States Coast Guard. His wife and three kids will miss him terribly.

On Tuesday, May 2nd, Governor Tina Kotek attended the 2023 Oregon Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony held by the DPSST. The memorial at the Oregon Public Safety Academy in Salem served as the outdoor venue for the ceremony.

So that loved ones and colleagues can participate in both memorials, the Oregon ceremony takes place before National Police Week events in the nation’s capital. The national memorial honors the lives of over 23,000 police officers who gave their lives protecting their communities.
