DC and NYC Joined Other 9 states in Requesting Federal Action on Gas Stoves

Nine states and the District of Columbia petition the federal government to adopt gas stove restrictions.

The state and local attorneys general have written to the Consumer Product Safety Commission requesting β€œvoluntary standards or mandatory regulations” to β€œreduce the emissions of harmful pollutants from gas stoves.” The letter was dated Monday, May 8.

They favor statutory standards over voluntary suggestions, citing the need for stricter regulations on ventilation and the release of potentially harmful chemicals as two examples.

They added, “Attempts to develop voluntary standards can stall or result in inadequate standards that will not protect against the health risks to consumers.” This was in reference to emissions.

They said, “Due to this possibility and the importance of protecting the health of consumers, the CPSC should initiate a rulemaking to develop mandatory gas stove standards.”

Earlier this year, the commission calledΒ for data about the “hazards associated with gas stoves” and “proposed solutions.” Studies have shown that the appliances may leak benzene, which can cause c@ncer, and has been linked to asthma.

In December, Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. indicated that the request was “the first step in what could be a long journey toward regulating gas stoves” and that a ban was possible. A political maelstrom was ignited when the statements were repeated earlier this year, with Republican critics targeting the concept of a ban on gas stoves.

Here’s what you need to know now about recent events in Oregon:

Commissioner Alexander Hoehn-Saric, who leads the panel and shares Trumka’s opposition to the ban, spoke out after the first outcry. Although the president chooses the commissionersΒ (there are now three Biden appointments and one Trump appointee), the commission is officially autonomous and does not report to the president.

On the other hand, President Biden has spoken out against a ban. Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Rhode Island, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington state were among the states that signed this week’s letter urging federal action.
