Portland’s waterfront park hosted the city’s first Cinco de Mayo celebration since the outbreak on Friday, May 05. On Friday, during a special ceremony held during the festival, 48 individuals from 25 different nations became naturalized citizens of the United States.
One of them was a Mexican woman named Myriam Navarro. “This was an inspiring goal that I had, so I had to study really hard, and here I am now,” Navarro said.
At age eight, she uprooted and headed west to California and Oregon. Navarro stated,Β βItβs been a journey.”It has been hard at times, but I was like, you know what, itβs gonna be that day where Iβm gonna study hard.β

Jacob Morales credited his mother for teaching him to stand up for himself. Morales said, βItβs amazing to be able to see different walks of life come and come and celebrate what we do.β Navarro has said that she plans to immediately begin working diligently now that she is a citizen of the United States.
Since becoming an ad*lt, “I have responsibilities now. I have to vote and work hard now to achieve the other dreams that I have.”
