WSP Is Seeking Witnesses to a Dangerous Work Zone Incident in Bingen

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is looking for anybody who saw or heard anything on State Route 14 at milepost 62 on May 4, 2023. Maintenance work being done by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) necessitated temporarily closing a lane in the vicinity.

When a car drove into the construction zone, despite WSDOT workers flagging traffic into one lane, the workers had to stop their work. The driver ignored the flaggers and continued eastbound in the closed lane, almost colliding with westbound traffic.

Troopers saw the car traveling at high speeds through the work zone, but for the sake of the employees and other drivers, they could not stop it. After passing the construction area, troopers pursued the car south over the Hood River Bridge into Oregon.

The driver took additional risks by driving the opposite way over the bridge’s two lanes, causing northbound drivers to swerve dangerously to avoid crashes. State troopers want the driver or owner of the car to discuss a potentially hazardous occurrence.

Troopers are looking for those who saw what happened or drove by between 9:10 and 9:30 a.m. and have dash cam footage. Contact Sergeant Nate Hovinghoff at 360-903-3965 or [email protected] if you can help police identify the driver or owner of the car in the photo.
