On Tuesday, April 25, the Oregon House unanimously approved laws to decrease plastic waste in the environment. As of January 1, 2025, polystyrene foam may no longer be used for food packaging, packing peanuts, or coolers under Senate Bill 543.
According to state authorities, using Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS) in food packaging should be prohibited because of the association between PFAS and cancer, high cholesterol, and other health problems.
The Oregon Health Authority has been tasked with implementing the changes proposed in Senate Bill 545, which officials say would make it simpler for businesses to provide reusable container choices.
“I am dedicated to working to preserve the health of our beautiful state, our wildlife, and our people. Plastic pollution is harmful, and we cannot recycle our way out of this significant problem,” said Representative Maxine Dexter (HD-33).

“Today, with the passage of SB 543 and SB 545, we took critical steps toward prioritizing the health and beauty of Oregon above convenience by phasing out the “availability of wasteful and toxic single-use plastics.”
According to Oregon state authorities, Governor Tina Kotek (D) will soon be presented with both measures for signing.
