Portland is One of the Least Ethnically Diverse US Cities

The United States has become a more varied country as the multiracial population has increased from 2.9% in 2010 to 10.2% in 2020, as reported by the Census Bureau. However, a recent study demonstrates that Portland is lagging behind the rest of the United States regarding diversity.

“It’s important to embrace diversity – and it’s good for the economy, too,” WalletHub, a personal finance website, concluded in a recent report. “Not only have waves of immigration changed the face of the nation, they’ve also brought in fresh perspectives, skills, and technologies to help the U.S. develop a strong adaptability to change.”

WalletHub researched social, cultural, economic, household, and religious diversity to determine which 501 most significant U.S. communities were the most varied. The most populous cities in the United States are ranked from most diverse to least diverse and are further classified by size.

Large metropolitan areas with the most culturally diversified populations are Houston, Arlington, New York, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dallas, Texas. However, behind Pittsburgh, El Paso, Texas, and Detroit, Portland ranked lowest regarding diversity among large cities.
