The following three highest areas for car theft in Portland are all located on the city’s eastern edge: Powellhurst-Gilbert (61), Lents (59), and Hazelwood (71).

The East Precinct of the Portland Police Bureau has been conducting specialized stolen vehicle operations missions since most vehicle thefts have happened in communities east of the Willamette River. They’ll spend hours patrolling a region and stopping people they think are driving stolen vehicles.

They spent 10 hours on March 19 in the Roseway and Madison South areas, where 32 vehicles have been stolen thus far this year. Eighty-eight percent of stolen vehicles in 2023 were recovered, and 84 percent were found within 30 days, as reported by PPB.

To improve its patrols for stolen automobiles, PPB is collaborating with OHSU academics. Using data analytics, the number of stolen vehicles recovered by police on stolen vehicle operations missions has increased from 1 in every 31 traffic stops to 1 in every six visits.
