The Portland Police Bureau reports that they apprehended a guy driving a stolen automobile at excessive speeds on the Springwater Trail. At 11:18 a.m., police from the Central Precinct arrived on the 7800 block of Southeast Oaks Park Way. PPB reports that two persons were found unconscious in a Kia Soul.
Portland police called for backup and started putting spike strips under the car’s tires. The driver, eventually identified as 23-year-old Lucas R. Lujan, tried to run when police awakened him asleep, but he crashed into the spike strips and a fence.
PPB said that Lujan then drove down the neighboring Springwater Trail at up to 50 mph speeds. He rushed out of the vehicle and chased after Lujan but was eventually outrun. K9 located Lujan on a riverbank embankment after a perimeter was established.
Lujan attempted to flee by jumping into the ocean, but PPB convinced him to return to shore so he could be apprehended. After reporting to authorities that he had accidentally ingested narcotics, Lujan was sent there for treatment.
